La Cañada Flintridge

La Cañada Flintridge is a special enclave tucked between the San Gabriel Mountains, Angeles National Forest, and the San Rafael Hills. Known for having some of the most highly ranked schools in California and in the U.S. overall, this close-knit community is beloved by those who call are lucky to call it home. With a population of approximately 20,000, La Cañada Flintridge has the appeal and quiet, protective, calm of a small town and yet it is just a short ride away from downtown Los Angeles, which glitters in the distance on a clear night. It has become a favorite with celebrities who enjoy a retreat that is still near the studios, Burbank Airport, and all types of recreation. Those who have lived in the area include Vince Vaughn, Angela Bassett, Haley Joel Osment, Kevin Costner, and many others. The charm of the area has made it a popular filming spot and it even played a minor role in the holiday classic “It’s A Wonderful Life.” 

Real Estate: The area is also famed for large graceful estates, some with room for horses, and a rare few of which have long architectural history. This area is rich in small-town charm and has many tree-lined neighborhoods with single-family homes for sale.

Community Life: Designated as a “Tree City USA,” La Cañada enjoys a gentle elevation from 970 to 2,400 above sea level and border the Angeles National Forest. There are several local parks including Mayor’s Discovery Park, Olberz Park, Memorial Park, and a city skate park. Hiking and riding trails also provide a great opportunity for outdoor recreation. Lanterman Auditorium, a full-service auditorium available for public use often hosts local shows and performances. The La Cañada Farmer’s Market is held on Saturday morning from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. across the street from Memorial Park.

Education: The La Cañada Unified School District is a high achieving district, which is characterized as forward-looking and supportive with strong parent participation. Students at all levels consistently score among the top 10% of all California students. La Cañada Unified School District received an Academic Performance Index score of 950 (API Growth 2012), the second highest in the state for a K-12 school district. Each elementary school in the district scored 956 or higher on the API, while La Canada High School scored  942, within the top 10 comprehensive general admission high schools in the state. About 98% of high school students enroll in post-secondary schools. The area also includes many private schools such as St. Francis High School,Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, and Flintridge Preparatory School.

Transportation: The area is accessed by State Route 2 and Interstate 210. It offers easy access to Pacific Coast Highway. The LCF Shuttle is a free shuttle that operates along Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge and is part of the Glendale Beeline Route 3.

Local Attractions: NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is located in the area and as the primary United States research and development center for the robotic exploration of the solar system, including the creation of the Mars rover. Descanso Gardens is famed for its beautiful paths winding through elegantly landscaped botanic gardens and forests. It boasts the largest collection of camellia species in the U.S. and is famous for its carved pumpkin display at Halloween known as Rise of the Jack O’Lanterns.
